“Myron the Presbyter”

St. Myron of Cyzicus

Presbyter of Achaia · Martyr under Decius

A presbyter of a good and wealthy family, gentle by disposition, who was serving the liturgy on the feast of the Nativity when soldiers came into the church to take his congregation. He went out and stood between them, and the persecution turned on him instead.

His life

He was of a well-off family in Achaia and was ordained presbyter, and the accounts are unanimous that his character was mild, that he was generous with what he had, and that he was loved by his people.

On the feast of the Nativity, in the persecution of Decius, the governor Antipater came into the church with soldiers to seize the congregation at the liturgy. Myron came out from the altar and put himself in front of them and rebuked the governor, and the soldiers took him instead.

He was tortured over a long period and finally beheaded, about the year 250. The Church keeps his memory on the seventeenth of August.
