St. Job of Pochaev

He was born John Zalizo in Galicia about 1551 and entered the monastery of the Transfiguration at Ugornitsy at twelve. He was tonsured, ordained, and became known well beyond his own house, and Prince Constantine of Ostrog, the great lay patron of the Orthodox in the Commonwealth, brought him to the Dubno monastery, where he was abbot for over twenty years.

The Union of Brest was concluded in 1596 and the Orthodox of those lands lost their legal standing. Job left Dubno for the mountain at Pochaev in Volhynia, where there was a small brotherhood and the Pochaev icon of the Theotokos, and he was made abbot there against his wish.

He built the monastery into the Orthodox stronghold of the region: a stone church, a press that printed Orthodox books when printing them was the point of the fight, and a school. He wrote against the Union himself. He also spent two decades in the courts, defending the monastery's lands against a neighboring lord who raided them and once carried off the monastery's property outright.

He kept a severe personal rule through all of it and is said to have spent days at a time in a cave on the mountain. He reposed on the twenty eighth of October, 1651, at about a hundred years old. His relics were uncovered in 1659 and he was glorified. The Church keeps the twenty eighth of August for the uncovering of his relics and the twenty eighth of October for his repose.
