St. Alypius the Stylite

Alypius set up his pillar near Adrianople in Paphlagonia, in the north of Asia Minor, and lived on it for the rest of his life. A community gathered at the foot of it, as happened around several of the pillar-saints.

The detail the tradition keeps about him is the endurance. He stood upright on the pillar for fifty-three years. When his legs at last failed him he did not come down, and spent the remaining fourteen years of his life lying on his side there.

He is commemorated on the twenty-sixth of November. The calendar note carried in this app places his death in 640; the older reference works are less precise and say only that he belongs to the seventh century, so the year is not stated here as settled.
